There are some things in this world that are just too important not to share… and my friends, I believe that what I am going to share with you is one of those things.
This is something I feel may touch so many of you, as sadly, cancer is something that is a part of so many people’s lives. I have seen those that I love fight this terrible disease and lose… but on the flipside I have some in my life, thankfully, that have fought and won! One particular friend, who is such an inspiration to me and so many others, he would say that he isn’t a survivor… he is a conqueror!!! Personally, I couldn’t agree more, nor could I be more thankful that he is!
So when I am given an opportunity to show my support for something special that has been created to help those that are fighting their own battles with cancer, or other illnesses, or perhaps just challenges that you may have in life… to give hope where it’s needed… than I am for sure going to help share that with others.
Let me tell you about Lung Leavin’ Day.
You must first learn a little bit about Heather Von St. James. Heather was diagnosed with Mesothelioma, which is a rare cancer caused only by asbestos exposure. Heather’s husband shared that it was his wife’s illness that taught them both the importance of acknowledging and overcoming fears, which if you think about, our fears are the things that keep us from living our lives to the fullest. If there is one thing that I have learned over the years, life is too short to not enjoy and live in the moment. This is why, what Lung Leavin’ Day stands for, is a message that I feel is so important to share.
This February 2nd marks the 8th anniversary of Heather’s life saving surgery, which did involve a risky procedure that required the removal of her left lung. For the Von St. James family, I think it is safe to say that February 2nd will be a day that they will always remember, and in turn, they have coined this day as Lung Leavin’ Day.
The idea here is for February 2nd to be a special day for everyone… to encourage and empower those to face their own fears! The Von St. James family uses this day to celebrate for those that are no longer with them… for those that are fighting their battles today… but also to celebrate life in general! That is one thing that too many of us take for granted, and shouldn’t! Life is precious and we need to to appreciate the time that we have here, and spend time with those that we love. In life, that is what is really important! At the Von St. James house, each February 2nd has friends and family gather around a bonfire where they write all their fears on a plate and smash it in the fire which is to represent the conquering of their fears. Now, I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of anything more inspiring from a family that has had to face their deepest fears… this is a family of conquerors!
Why not participate yourself in Lung Leavin’ Day? The Von St. James family has created a wonderful interactive page that tells the full story of this special day and how you can take part. You can find that page at: http://www.mesothelioma.com/heather/lungleavinday/
I, for one, will take part on February 2nd. I will do that not only for myself, but for all those that I love that have had to or are going through their own battles… cancer or otherwise. I am so very thankful to have each and every one of those individuals in my life! But you know what, I will also do this, in support of the Von St. James family, who I am truly thankful for the fact that they took the time to share their story with me.
